The 1979 singles champion at Farmers Classic when the event was held inside Pauley Pavilion, his triumph that year had an extra layer of intrigue because his win in the final came over his longtime doubles partner John McEnroe.
As a doubles team, Fleming and McEnroe claimed 57 titles, the third most among teams in the Open Era, including the 1983 Farmers Classic crown. The duo also won four titles at Wimbledon, three at the US Opens and seven straight ATP World Tour Finals championships.
Together they reached 68 doubles finals and compiled a 351-42 record. On Davis Cup duty for the United States, the duo had a 14-1 record and picked up three titles in 1979, 1981-82.
Overall, Fleming ended his career with 66 doubles titles and a 507-177 record. He also won three singles titles in his career. He spent 17 weeks ranked No. 1 in the World in doubles and reached a career high of No. 8 in singles.
An All-American at UCLA, he won the 1976 NCAA doubles title and was that year’s singles runner-up as well.
Fleming is the 29th person to be named a Farmers Classic Honoree.
