* To anyone working at Wimbledon, “middle Sunday” is among the best traditions in sports. It’s a fantastic way to catch your breath after a hectic first week and rest up for a second week run to the title.
What this naturally sets up is a big Saturday night. Knowing this, the Bryan Brothers Band took full advantage, with their singer David Baron flying over from San Francisco to join the twins for a set at Hand in Hand in Wimbledon Village.
Even the
New York Times
took notice of the brothers’ musical prowess. Stay tuned for information on a Bryan Brothers Band concert during the LA Tennis Open Presented by Farmers Insurance Group.
* Tommy Haas is looking to continue visiting one of his favorite California restaurants when the two-time defending champion returns to LA. Believe it or not, the veteran craves getting an In & Out Burger, so much so that he’s been known to go daily during tournaments in the area. His favorite is a double-double.
* Twitter is all the rage in the social media world these days, and Santa Monica’s Sam Querrey is the latest tennis player to join the craze. Found @
samquerrey
, he’s been tweeting about everything from the Indian restaurant in Wimbledon Village to his hiring of an intern this summer (no joke).
* Heading into the final weekend at the All England Club there is considerable debate about whether or not Pete Sampras will make the trip to London to see Roger Federer potentially break his record for Grand Slam titles won. While Pete’s plans remain unknown, it is certain that he’ll be in LA on July 27 to play Marat Safin in the Millennium Challenge on opening night of the LA Tennis Open Presented by Farmers Insurance Group.
* Seven players who are heading to LA this summer will go from Wimbledon to Davis Cup World Group Quarterfinal ties the following weekend. Bob and Mike Bryan will take up their usual role playing the Saturday doubles rubber for the U.S. in Croatia. Russians Marat Safin and Dmitry Tursunov will take on Dudi Sela and Isreal in another tie, while Argentine Leonardo Mayer will join the 2008 Davis Cup runner-up Argentina against 2007 LA champion Radek Stepanek and the Czech Republic team. Those ties take place July 10-12, while those players will head to LA the week of July 27.
* Very tough loss for LA participant Mardy Fish in the Wimbledon doubles, crashing out late Friday in the semifinals with partner James Blake 10-8 in the fifth to Nestor-Zimonjic. Fish currently has the highest combined ranking on the ATP World Tour, boasting pre-Wimbledon rankings of No. 25 in singles and No. 16 in doubles.
