Saturday was the first full day of action at the 2009 LA Tennis Open Presented by Farmers Insurance Group. Much of the action was on the Sycamore Courts as 16 qualifying matches were held. Four of those matches went to three sets, while one ended with a double bagel as Japan’s Go Soeda defeated Geoff Gehrke 6-0, 6-0. Six Americans were among those who advanced to the second round, which will be held Sunday beginning at noon at the Sycamore Courts.

Meanwhile, Straus Stadium remained busy as many main draw participants were getting in some practice. Tommy Haas, Marat Safin, Marcos Baghdatis, Dudi Sela, Vince Spadea and Taylor Dent were among those on the courts on Saturday. When players weren’t working out, many were in front of a television so they could watch the semifinals from the year’s first Olympus US Open Series event in Indianapolis. All four of Indy’s semifinalists – Frank Dancevic, Robby Ginepri, John Isner and Sam Querrey – are heading to LA next.
Late in the day, the doubles draw was made, with Bob and Mike Bryan coming in as the top seeds.
