Murray
Top seeds Andy Murray and Sam Querrey both needed three sets to get through their semifinal matches to set up a showdown for the 2010 Farmers Classic, presented by Mercedes-Benz, title on Sunday at the LA Tennis Center.
Murray exchanged lopsided sets with Feliciano Lopez before closing out a 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 win on Saturday.
Querrey, the defending champion, saved one match point in the 10th game of the second set in his 6-7(3) 7-6(5) 6-4 win over Janko Tipsarevic.
Murray, the No. 1 seed, claimed the first set in just 24 minutes, winning all but 11 of the 36 points.
Lopez quickly turned the tables, and he needed just 31 minutes to bring the match on level terms at one set each.
In the final set, Murray got an early break as Lopez managed to hit just 35 percent of his first serves in the final stanza.
The afternoon semifinal between Querrey and Tipsarevic was much tighter throughout. After relatively easy holds throughout the first, Querrey had five set points on the Tipsarevic serve in the 12th game.
The Serbian held off those efforts, and used that momentum to open up a 6-1 lead in the tie-break before claiming it 7-3.
There was just one break opportunity in the second set, but it was a crucial one. Querrey fell behind 30-40 in the 10th game, affording Tipsarevic a match point.
Three straight points from Querrey leveled the set a 5-all, but Tipsarevic again looked to have the chance to close out the match as he opened up a 5-1 lead in the tie-break.
Querrey rallied to win six straight points to send the match to a third set.
The American got off on the wrong foot in the third set, getting broken in the first game. Querrey got the break back in the sixth game to draw even at 3-all.
In the ninth game, Querrey had to hold off four break chances from Tipsarevic, and then converted a break in the 10th game to claim the match.
Querrey and Murray will face off Sunday in the final of Farmers Classic, presented by Mercedes-Benz.
The doubles semis were much more straightforward. Five-time champions Bob and Mike Bryan needed just 54 minutes to defeat Rohan Bopanna and Aisam Qureshi 6-2 6-4.
The win was the 15th in a row for the Bryans in LA.
The twins from Camarillo will face Eric Butorac and former UCLA Bruin Jean-Julien Rojer, who defeated Ross Hutchins and Jordan Kerr 6-3 6-2 in 65 minutes.
